White discharge during pregnancy
Understanding white discharge during pregnancy
White discharge during pregnancy is normal during pregnancy, also known as leukorrhea. The white discharge is a thin, clear, and white-colored vaginal discharge, which has a mild odor. The discharge increases throughout the pregnancy, reducing the risk of vaginal and uterine infections. The volume of white discharge during pregnancy is heavy due to high levels of estrogen and progestogen hormones.

How do you deal with white discharge during pregnancy?
Some tips that help in managing discharge during pregnancy and maintaining vaginal health include:
- Avoid douching because douching can cause infection because of disruption of the naturally balanced vaginal environment.
- Use panty lines that absorb excess vaginal discharge and keep you dry and comfortable.
- Wear breathable underwear made of cotton, keeping vaginal surrounding dry.
- Choose mild unscented soap, unscented toilet paper, and warm water for vaginal cleaning rather than harsh scented female hygiene items which disturb the natural balance.
- Wearing tight jeans and nylon pantyhose causes friction and doesn’t allow air circulation, causing wetness and irritation, resulting in increasing infection; switch to loose-fitting clothing.
- Avoiding eating food rich in too much sugar causes yeast infection. Include vitamins, protein, and minerals-rich food in your diet.
What is the difference between vaginal discharge and a “show”?
Vaginal discharge | “Show” Mucus Plug |
Vaginal discharge is a naturally produced fluid or mucus which helps in keeping the vagina clean and moist. | The mucus plug which seals the opening of the cervix during pregnancy is known as “show.” |
The increasing blood flow to the pelvic area, increased hormonal changes, and changes in the cervix increase the quantity of vaginal discharge. | The mucus plug is a watery, thick, sticky, or jelly substance that looks pink or brown and might contain blood. |
There is clear white with mild, odorless scent vaginal discharge during pregnancy. | With the beginning of dilation for labor, the mucus plug comes out. |
Vaginal discharge protects the birth canal and prevents infections. | Losing mucus doesn’t necessarily mean that labor is imminent. It is one of the signs that the body is getting ready for childbirth and a normal part of the pre-labor process. |

How do we know if it is a discharge or a water break?
The sac where the baby is inside during the pregnancy is filled with amniotic fluid. When the baby is born, it breaks, and amniotic liquid comes out. This is known as water breaking. Sometimes it’s become hard to differentiate between amniotic fluid and vaginal discharge.
When the water breaks, there is a sudden gush of clear, watery fluid, which is not the same as vaginal discharge. The amniotic liquid in green and brown color containing blood comes out, and the baby’s movement becomes less than usual.
